MySejahtera Scan At Petrol Stations: Contradicting Direction From PDRM And MKN (Updated)

(UPDATE – 5:55 PM): The matter has since been clarified by Senior Minister for Security Cluster, Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Do check out our follow-up report right here.

ORIGINAL STORY (10:56 AM):

You apparently have to scan the MySejahtera QR code when you visit a petrol station even though you are there just to pump fuel into your vehicle and don’t have the intention to enter the station’s convenience store.

At least that is what Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Deputy Director DCP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid told China Press through a WhatsApp conversation.

This conversation took place after a man claimed that his father was fined RM 1000 by the police for not scanning and using the MySejahtera app at a petrol station even though he was there just to fuel up his vehicle. In the screenshot shared by China Press, the analogy used by DCP Mior was quite straight forward stating petrol stations are likely a high traffic area which means placing one at a higher risk of exposure to COVID-19.

He also insists that visitors should wear a mask when at a petrol station which is something that everyone can definitely agree on. However, the National Security Council (MKN) may have a different idea though according to the report by Sin Chew Daily.

The newspaper had made two calls to the MKN hotline with one of the officers stating  that there is no need to scan the MySejahtera code if visitors are paying for their fuel directly on the petrol pump payment machine. On another hand, the other officer said that visitors still need to go to the counter and scan the code due to the possibility of COVID-19 cases in the nearby areas regardless of your intention at the station.

That being said though, Sin Chew also did report that further clarifications will be made by MKN today. All in all, this looks like yet another case of SOP misinterpretation which does happen from time to time through various phases of the Movement Control Order (MCO) and the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that we have gone through earlier in the year and are currently going through.

So, let’s hope that a proper announcement will be made by the respective authorities to clear the air on the matter as soon as possible.
