Huawei Marine has announced plans to build an undersea cable system to link Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia. The system will have a total design capacity of more than 30Tbps, and is intended to bring increased network bandwidth to the Southeast Asian region.
At 1,300km, the cable system will link Cherating in Malaysia and Rayong in Thailand, and comprise a branching unit that will establish connection between the main network into Sihanoukville in Cambodia. Assisting Huawei Marine in the design and deployment of the cables is a consortium of SEA telcos that comprises of Telekom Malaysia, Symphony Communication Public Company, and Telcotech.
Set to be ready by the end of 2016, the new submarine cable system will mark the first time that Cambodia has access to a high speed undersea cable network. It is also designed to allow Cambodia’s neighbours, Laos and Myanmar to tap into the infrastructure with terrestrial-based networks. This essentially provides a high speed network connection to these countries as well.
Huawei Marine is a joint venture between Huawei Technologies, who make telecommunications equipment in addition to smartphones, and Global Marine Systems.
