Samsung has registered a patent for electronic hue-changing sunglasses which can be controlled with a smartphone. According to the company’s patent, these new sunglasses will be able to change its hue and tint, both on the frame and lens.
It is unclear how the eyewear’s appearance will be but images from the application illustrate how the device might look along with how its function will be carried out in practice. The pictures suggest that additional gesture controls may be placed on the frame of the sunglasses. Samsung may also be tempted to make these sunglasses only compatible with its own line of smartphones, as it has been known to do with other accessories.
What is unknown is if the sunglasses will have any other functions than just changing colour. It seems unusual that Samsung would be spending money on developing a purely cosmetic accessory. There is no indication of a display of any sort, which makes this patent filing very puzzling indeed.
