NVIDIA Tegra X1

At its on-going pre-CES 2015 press conference, NVIDIA has taken the drape off its brand new mobile processor called Tegra X1. The new processor is based on the company’s Maxwell GPU architecture that is previously only used for GeForce desktop and laptop’s GPU.

Previously codenamed as Erista, the Tegra X1 is a combination of an 8-core 64-bit ARM CPU and a 256-core Maxwell-based GPU. Together, the processor apparently is able to offer 1 teraflop worth of processing power which is rather impressive considering its size.

In addition to that, Tegra X1 also has the twice the performance and power efficiency as compared to its predecessor Tegra K1. Not to forget, the new processor is also able to support 4K videos at 60fps as well as H.265 and VP9 compression technology.

NVIDIA PX Auto-Pilot Car Computer with Dual NVIDIA Tegra X1 Processor

Even though NVIDIA unveiled the new chip as a mobile processor, the company didn’t show off any new Tegra X1-based smartphones or tablets at the event. Instead, NVIDIA announces the DRIVE CX digital cockpit computer and DRIVE PX auto-pilot car computer (shown above) as the first set of products that are powered by Tegra X1.

For further details regarding the NVIDIA Tegra X1, check out this extensive white paper on the new chip at NVIDIA’s official website.
