GameSpy has confirmed that its expansive multiplayer servers will be shut down for good by 31st May. Hundreds of games will be affected, although recent titles will be spared. The full list of games that will lose their multiplayer function can be found on GameSpy’s website.
News of GameSpy closing its doors explains Nintendo’s move to turn off multiplayer servers for both the DS and Wii, as a large number of titles exclusive to the Japanese manufacturer are on the list of affected games.
Electronic Arts has pledged to save at least three titles from the shut down, as Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 2142 are still apparently very popular with gamers. “We’re working on finding a transition,” a spokesperson told IGN, “but still have technical hurdles to overcome. We will make an announcement when there is news to share.”
2K Games will be migrating the PC versions of Borderlands, Civilization 3 and Civilization 4 to Steamworks; although the console versions of Borderlands and Civilization Revolutions will probably not make the transition.
