The Google doodle is often used to commemorate important events. Today it is celebrating the birthday of the late Yasmin Ahmad. The filmmaker passed away in 2009, but many Malaysians still lament the fact that Petronas Hari Raya advertisements will never be the same again. Her feature films appealed to masses with the cross-cultural themes and the willingness to address social matters that most contemporary directors have shied away from.
This is not the first time that Google has honoured a Malaysian, with other doodles being made for the Merdeka day celebrations and, even, the the recent 13th general election.
