Android VP Hugo Barra

Update: It looks like Hugo Barra will indeed join Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi. Barra posted a leaving note on his Google+ account saying that he will be joining Xiaomi in a couple of weeks to expand the company’s reach globally. This definitely is great news, especially if it means that Xiaomi will be heading to Malaysia. Guess all we can do now is wait and see what Barra will bring to Xiaomi.

It looks like the Vice President of Google Android, Hugo Barra, has left the company. Earlier today, Google confirmed that Barra has already left the company, wishing him “We wish Hugo Barra the best. We’ll miss him at Google and we’re excited that he is staying within the Android ecosystem”. Now, people leave all the time, it’s completely normal for one to move on and to discover better things in life, so guess where Barra is reported to go? To Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, reports All Things D.

If you are not familiar with Xiaomi, it is a fast-growing Chinese Android phone maker who has manufactured some pretty impressive devices, hardware and software wise. The company is still pretty new, it has only been making Android phones for the Chinese market for the past two years, but it has already taken a leading position in the country’s mobile market. It has even been reported to have surpassed Apple in terms of shipment. With the great potential of Xiaomi and the fact that Google said that Barra will still be within the Android ecosystem, this may actually be true.

Apart from Barra leaving the company, nothing have been confirmed though. Google didn’t even provide any  further details as to what the company will be doing about Barra’s departure or who will be taking over his role.
