Alienware 14

Three years in the marking, the Alienware 14 is one of the three new gaming laptops that Dell (the parent company of Alienware) have introduced at E3 few days ago. Interestingly, it only takes few days for the Alienware 14 to be available in Malaysia alongside its bigger brother, the equally new Alienware 17.

Even though it took Dell such a long time to conceive it, the Alienware 14 is still quite bulky as per its predecessor, the Alienware M14x. In fact, the Alienware 14 is actually thicker than M14x at 41.70mm as compared to M14x’s height that is listed at 37.8mm. Surprising, huh?

Despite the thickness, the Alienware 14 is slightly lighter though at around 2.77kg while the M14x weights at around 2.92kg. Also, the new Alienware 14 does come with a completely new exterior design that was claimed to be inspired by jet engines and stealth bombers together with the use of anodized aluminium shell and magnesium alloy body. The keyboard on Alienware 14 is now fortified with a reinforced plate for more solid typing experience with its key travel and responsiveness have been tweaked to suit gamers.

Additionally, there are certainly more AlienFX lighting zones on Alienware 14 than M14x as you can now see them on the notebook’s top area as well as the surrounding edges. Even the Alienware 14’s touchpad is now fully lit instead of just its outlines as per M14x. The AlienFX lighting system is now also able to react to certain in-game moments in more than 60 game titles.

In total, Alienware 14 owners are able to play with up to 20 colors over 10 difference lighting zones which resulted in over 10 trillion lighting combinations. This can be done through the AlienFX section in the newly updated version of Alienware Command Centre software which also includes AlienAdrenaline for game performance, AlienTouch for touch pad sensitivity and AlienFusion for power management.

In terms of firepower, the Alienware 14 comes with the Haswell-based 2.4GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ quad-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M with 2GB GDDR5 memory. We were told that customers are also able to opt for NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory although this particular option is still not available on Dell Malaysia’s website at the time that this article is published.
