Just when you think that the issue of melting 12VHPWR connectors was about the worst thing to happen to NVIDIA’s RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs, fate decides to step in and throw another case of melting 8-pin power connectors at our faces. Worse, the victim was an AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series GPU, and not an NVIDIA model.
The poor, unfortunate Redditor, AwarenessHour9192, posted their plight on the PCBaumeister subreddit. They reportedly had some trouble with their Radeon RX 7900 XTX, spending several months trying to figure out why it kept freezing and giving them black screens. On a sidenote, they were using Thermal Grizzly’s Wireview, a custom PCIe Power port connector that also features a mini LCD display which provides details about the card’s power consumption.

AwarenessHour9192’s luck changed when, during a night that they were unable to sleep, they tried reinstalling the card physically, thinking something had gotten loose. Lo and behold, they noticed that the WireView accessory and its connectors had melted and completely burnt out.
Not wasting any time, they reported their findings to Thermal Grizzly and, to the company’s and Roman “Der8auer” Hartung’s credit, got back to the owner rather quickly, asking the owner to contact its support team and allow them to investigate the damaged unit. At the time of writing, the cause of the meltdown has yet to be established, but the owner maintains, but they did state that this sort of situation could happen if the connector is not fully seated. AwarenessHour9192 insisted that they made sure the connectors were fully plugged in.

Again, cases of melting 8-pin GPU power connectors are far less common than melting 12VHPWR connectors, unless, of course, one decides to be stupid and try to split the power from one 8-pin PCIe cable into two. In which case, they deserve the dumpster fire and twisted metal of a PC that is coming their way.
