Travellers heading out or coming into Malaysia need not download and use the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe), as it is not yet mandatory. At this time, they may continue using other existing methods for immigration clearance at any of the country’s entry points.

“At present, the use of MyNIISe is not mandatory, and travellers still have options, including passing through autogrates using their passports, not only via QR codes” Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, Immigration Director-General (DG), said recently. The QR code he mentions is via the MyBorderPass application, which is currently one of the options one may use at the immigration counters, rather than having to take out your passport and scan it.

That said, the Immigration DG is encouraging the publis to use the MyNIISe app, as it expedites immigration clearance, requiring that you log in your key details via MyDigital ID. For that matter, MyDigital ID will soon become the only way to log on to the app.

Earlier this month, the Home Ministry said that the implementation of MyDigital ID in this manner is part of the NIISe initiative. This initiative aims to accurately and securely verify user identity via the National Registration Department database, without storing any personal data.

Beyond that, it’s supposedly faster and more convenient for users, as it eliminates the need for multiple passwords. To prepare for this change, the ministry advised Malaysians aged 18 and above to download the MyDigital ID app.

First introduced back in September 2025 in the state Johor, and as of 30 December 2025, the MyNIISe app has recorded 599,967 downloads and 287,258 registered users. The app is expected to be rolled out in phases, with KLIA1 and KLIA2, plus airports in Bayan Lepas, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu to be next.
