Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that the target date of operations for the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line has been pushed back to 31 December 2025 or later, depending on the outcome of ongoing tests. This marks yet another delay for the new 37.8km line, which was previously slated to commence in September, but then pushed back to sometime later this year.
Lok explained that both the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and LRT operator Prasarana are prioritising safety, reliability, and technical compliance. The LRT3 line is in the final phase of testing and commissioning (T&C) to ensure the system’s reliability and safety, he added.

“If these T&C activities can be completed as planned, the line may be ready for opening by the end of this year,” he said while winding up the Budget 2026 debate in the Dewan Rakyat. “However, it remains highly dependent on the outcomes of the ongoing tests.”
The Transport Minister stressed that final testing is among the most critical elements. He noted that the official opening date will only be confirmed once all verification processes are completed.

Authorities have carried out trial operations without passengers in the recent weeks to ensure no technical disruptions occur once the line opens. Loke said several additional tests are still required to confirm operational readiness across all aspects, including stations, signalling systems and staffing. Testing and verification work will continue until the end of December.
Loke also noted that Prasarana’s Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has recently recruited 956 personnel in preparation for LRT3 operations and maintenance. The hires cover a wide range of roles, including operations, technical, engineering and support teams, to ensure the service runs smoothly, safely and efficiently once launched.
