From Comet to OpenAI’s undisclosed project, many major AI companies are hard at work developing their own in-house AI browser. However, if you’re keen on using AI as your default way of searching but not interested in downloading any of them, then Mozilla has you covered.
Starting today, you can now use Perplexity AI as a search engine option for Mozilla’s Firefox browser. The AI addition had a limited rollout in the US, UK, and Germany earlier in the year. Now, after an abundance of “positive feedback”, the company will be rolling out the feature globally, alongside Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo.
To activate the feature, all you have to do is navigate the small drop-down menu at the far left side of the search bar and click Perplexity AI. If you want to permanently change your default search engine, you can do so from the same menu. From there, the search engine would operate as a normal chatbot, providing you with answers with relevant citations to your queries.
According to TechCrunch, Mozilla said that it would look to add more AI answer engines or search options if the Perplexity pilot was successful. The reason why the popular browser chose to partner up with Perplexity first is that the AI “maintains strict prohibitions against selling or sharing personal data”.
As mentioned earlier, you can now use the AI chatbot as your default search engine for PC starting today, and if you haven’t received it, either be patient and wait for it to rollout or manually update your Firefox browser to the latest version. Also, it is worth noting that Mozilla does plan to bring this feature to mobile in the coming months. No exact timeline has been provided.
