It goes without saying that the PS5 is PlayStation’s biggest and heaviest console to date. Despite that, many users would like to own a truly portable PlayStation that isn’t PlayStation Portal’s Remote Play. Well, a Japanese modder built his own portable PS5, complete with a 15.6-inch display and carrying handle.

The YouTuber known as Tera shared his process and step-by-step procedure on the platform. Outside of using a “junk PS5” for his build, Tera managed to also fit two stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an additional USB-A port, and a heat monitor in the compact frame. However, it came at the cost of the USB-C.

One of the major hurdles when it came to reducing the console’s size was the cooling system, as the original’s was too big for the frame. To compensate, Tera instead used a server-grade vapour-chamber heatsink, rated for 145W TDP, for cooling.

The cooling fan was also a similar story; hence, Tera designed and 3D-printed smaller yet equally efficient fans of his own. This is where he also added a heat sensor and controller to help regulate fan speeds.

Once that was done, all that was left was to 3D print the very chassis of the device. For extra portability, Tera also added in a handle, likely for portability and to complement the suitcase facade. For those curious about the specifics, the arcade-cabinet-esque console measures in at 357 × 224 × 53 mm (excluding the briefcase handle on top) and weighs 2.8kg. It was even able to comfortably fit within a laptop bag.

This isn’t the first time the modder has worked on a portable PS5. Over a year ago, Tera worked on creating a travel-friendly PS5, but the modder refused to label his invention as portable because of its size and weight. Despite the significant improvements, the modder noted the poor sound quality of the installed stereo speaker, something he plans to improve in the next iteration.
