The first section of the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) has officially opened, offering a new link between Sungai Long and Ampang. It is positioned as a critical part of easing traffic flow in and around the Klang Valley, particularly for commuters who frequently travel between Ampang, Kajang, and Cheras. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the launch yesterday, announced that motorists will be able to use the stretch toll-free for a month, from 6am on 30 August until 11.59pm on 29 September 2025.
Section One of the expressway spans 24km and is built as a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. It features four interchanges at Sungai Long, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Hulu Langat, and Ampang, supported by four toll plazas and two lay-bys. The route also forms part of the larger Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road (KLORR), designed to help divert traffic away from the city centre and reduce congestion in the Klang Valley.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who was also present, said that the newly opened section of the EKVE is expected to reduce travel time from Ampang to Kajang to just 20 minutes. He confirmed that Section Two, which will connect the route directly to Ukay Perdana, is already under construction. Once completed, it will finalise the full 39km EKVE alignment as envisioned in the original development plan.

Anwar further called on the Works Ministry and concessionaires to avoid delays in completing the remaining section. “Congestion has already reached its peak. In Kuala Lumpur and surrounding cities, traffic jams are severe, so these highway projects must be accelerated and kept on schedule,” he said.
