Apple has rolled out a new update for its platforms, namely iOS 18.6.2, iPadOS 18.6.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.6.1. With iOS 26 and its equivalents on the horizon, updates for the company’s current operating systems aren’t exactly a priority. However, this release contains a crucial security fix for a vulnerability tied to image processing.
This release patches a vulnerability related to ImageIO, which is a development framework for reading and writing image data. In the security notes, Apple explained that “processing a malicious image file may result in memory corruption”. This is due to an out-of-bounds write issue, which has been addressed with improved bounds checking.
The bitten fruit company went on to note that the vulnerability may have been exploited in extremely sophisticated attacks against certain targeted individuals. Users are advised to install the update as soon as possible to ensure their device remains secure. To do so, one can simply navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.
Aside from updating the aforementioned operating systems, Apple has also pushed similar fixes for iPads and Macs that are stuck using older firmware versions. These include iPadOS 17.7.10, macOS Sonoma 14.7.8, and macOS Ventura 13.7.8.
As there doesn’t seem to be any indication that Apple is working on an iOS 18.7, this will likely be the final update for iOS 18 before iOS 26. Beta versions of the brand’s upcoming new software are already available for the public.
