Best think twice before you send a scathing message or comment, as bullying, harassment, insults, and identity misuse online are now crimes and are now punishable by law. This amendment to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act A1750) hopes to curb the instances of online harassment that may lead to suicide and suicide attempts.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the amendments introduce new sections, namely 507B to 507G, that specifically target bullying by any means necessary, which includes online. These amendments were approved by the King in February of this year and were gazetted on 7 March.
“These amendments provide for offences related to harassment, threats, bullying, insults and misuse of identity information, including situations that may lead to suicide attempts as well as cases where the provoked person attempts or commits suicide,” Azalina said. “It is the responsibility of every citizen to comply with these laws,” she added and that “ignorance of the law is not an excuse.”
Regardless of whether the person intended to harm the victim or not, offenders caught in the act could face jail time of up to 10 years, a fine, or both. Azalina emphasised that understanding one’s legal rights and obligations is the first step towards creating a safer and more humane society. If you’re unsure how far-reaching this new law can be, it is advisable to visit the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department or the Legal Aid Department for clarification on the amendments.
