PLUS Malaysia has announced that it will begin trialling a new open toll payment system powered by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology along a segment of the North-South Expressway later this year. The initiative, which aims to provide highway users with a smoother, faster tolling experience, is being led by the Ministry of Works in collaboration with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and several concessionaires.
Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who reviewed the new system during a demonstration at Persada PLUS, said the innovation reflects a step forward in the government’s plans to eventually roll out the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system nationwide. He noted that the new ANPR-based platform allows for barrier-free tolling, enabling vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping while maintaining flexible payment options.

The Works Minister said the pilot phase, which will be available to a select group of testers, is slated to begin this October along the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua stretch of the PLUS highway. Initially, the system will be rolled out across 13 toll plazas and up to 35 existing Touch ‘n Go RFID lanes, with public participation expected to be expanded in stages. PLUS noted that it uses high-precision ANPR cameras to identify number plates and deduct toll charges from linked accounts automatically.
Those interested can register their vehicle and payment details via the JustGO mobile app, which is revealed to be developed in-house by PLUS by local experts and did not require government funding. The platform also supports digital features such as e-invoice generation and transaction history review. Additionally, there are no fees involved in signing up for the service, and the system is designed to be compatible with multiple cashless payment modes.
