Sonos has acknowledged that a very small number of its Roam speakers are overheating, primarily around the USB-C Port. The overheating issue actually caused several cables connected to it to be melted.
The issue was first brought to light when a Redditor posted their burnt out Sonos Roam on the platform, complete with pictures of the affected speaker, post-meltdown. While not necessarily important, we think it should be pointed out that they were using the cable provided with the portable speaker.
It didn’t take long before another user posted their burned-out Roam too, at which point, Sonos kicked itself into gear, requesting photos and details on the damaged speakers.
The (sort of) good news is that the issue appears to be limited to the first generation Sonos Roam, which launched in 2021, and not the updated 2024 Roam 2. In an email to Bloomberg, the company said that it was “closely tracking a limited number of reports involving USB-C charging connection on some first generation Sonos Roam speakers.”
“While the overall incidence rate is very low, and environmental conditions appear to play a role, we’ve taken several proactive steps to even further reduce the likelihood of this issue, including software updates and accessory improvements.”
