While OpenAI is solidifying the launch of its own Chromium-based browser, rival AI company Perplexity has went ahead and done its own. It’s called Comet, but it’s not freely available like most browsers already out there. At least not yet.
Instead, the Comet AI browser is only available for those who are subscribed to the Perplexity Max plan, which costs US$200 (~RM850) a month. So it’s more like an added bonus for those who paid to get access to things like unlimited Labs usage and early access to new features.
As you’d expect, it uses Perplexity AI as its default search engine. Also as you’d expect, beyond just providing you with search results it also condenses them into an AI-generated answer, similar to what you’d expect from Google search and the resulting Gemini’s summary.
Leaning more on the AI side of things, you can call up the AI in a sidebar to ask questions, summarise content and do things for you, like booking meetings or making purchases. But in both cases, it’s probably best to not rely on it so completely that you don’t check its work.
If you don’t feel like forking up the money for a Perplexity Max subscription, there’s a waitlist that you can sign up for. The company will roll Comet out to those who do “over the summer”. New users will also be able to invite a limited number of people to use Comet.
