The next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event will take place next week on 9 July, during which the company is expected to announce its new foldables. Aside from the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7, Samsung’s tri-folding smartphone is rumoured to make an appearance as well, although it’s said to be launched in October. Ahead of its supposed unveiling, however, the device has been spotted in the latest One UI 8 build.
A report by Android Authority revealed animation files depicting the tri-fold, which might be called the Galaxy G Fold. The animations show the phone’s design, which includes three rear panels connected with two hinges. It is worth noting that one of these hinges is smaller than the other, and both hinges fold inward like in the Flex G prototypes. This distinguishes the G Fold from Huawei’s take on a tri-fold, which folds in an S shape.
The inward-folding design means that the device must be unfolded from right to left, and the right side of the display cannot be folded first, as it houses the rear cameras. Speaking of which, the G Fold sports the familiar pill-shaped camera island that’s featured on other Samsung phones. Meanwhile, the outer display is located in the middle when the phone is in its unfolded state, with no usable screens on the other rear panels.
The tri-fold is referred to as Multifold 7 in the One UI 8 code, although it could just be a working codename for the device, rather than a finalised commercial name. The name Q7M has also been used in reference to the phone, apparently. As for the device’s specifications, its listing in China’s 3C certification database indicates that the battery will support 25W charging, much like Samsung’s other offerings.
Other than that, past rumours point to a 9.96-inch inner display, a cover screen measuring 6.54 inches, and a total weight of approximately 300g. Unfortunately, Samsung’s first tri-fold might not make its way to Malaysia, as it will reportedly remain exclusive to China and Korea.
