Malaysia aims to finalise its national regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI) by the end of June, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo confirmed. The framework, developed by the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), will serve as the foundation for the country’s governance of AI technologies, whether through new laws, regulatory guidelines or the adoption of international standards.
Gobind, speaking at the launch of the Cybersecurity Professional Capability Development Programme earlier today, noted that NAIO is in the final stages of preparing the report, which has included consultations with various industry stakeholders. Several perspectives have already been shared and incorporated, with more discussions ongoing, he added.
The upcoming report is intended to help Malaysia determine the most suitable path forward for responsible AI deployment. Gobind emphasised that Malaysia’s strategy would centre on strong oversight and public confidence in digital innovations.
Additionally, the Digital Minister stated that the regulatory framework must reflect the unique risks associated with AI in different sectors, acknowledging the technology’s extensive influence across industries. He also underlined the need for careful navigation of emerging risks as digital transformation accelerates.
While the Ministry of Digital works on establishing a national regulatory framework for AI, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) previously revealed that it will continue to oversee ethical governance through the National Guidelines on Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics (AIGE). Although there are no immediate plans to introduce AI-specific legislation, existing laws such as the Communications and Multimedia Act and the Penal Code still apply. Its minister, Chang Lih Kang, stated that the long-term aim is to enforce AIGE as law, with a full ethical framework expected early next year.
