A couple of months back, Microsoft Malaysia announced that the Malaysia West cloud region will be going live in Q2 of the year. Today, as part of its AI Tour for businesses, the company announced the general availability of the cloud region. Also announced were a number of companies that have already started making use of the cloud region, including Petronas, SIRIM, TNG Digital and Veeam, among others.
As we’ve previously reported, the Malaysia West cloud region consists of three data centres within the Greater Kuala Lumpur area. Microsoft says the new cloud region “will offer Malaysian organisations access to scalable, available, and resilient cloud services coupled with in-country residency, high levels of security, and lower latency”.
The company also cites once again findings from the International Data Corporation (IDC) that predicts Microsoft and its cloud customers will be bringing in US$10.9 billion” (~RM46.3 billion) in revenue over the next four years. And of that, the new Malaysia West cloud region will contribute about 16.9% of said figure.
Microsoft also announced the BINA AI Malaysia initiative, providing infrastructure and tech solutions as well as “partnering with stakeholders across industries to drive AI adoption and developing AI-ready talent”. Part of this “includes progressing the establishment of the Microsoft Natinoal AI Innovation Centre”, with potential partners including Petronas, as well as NAIO under the Digital Ministry.
