With the automotive industry adapting to the electric vehicle trend, the technology of the segment is also improving simultaneously. Recently, German automaker, BMW has released a press release announcing that it has started the real-world testing of solid-state batteries using a prototype version of its luxury electric sedan, the i7. The test vehicle, equipped with an advanced solid-state battery (ASSB) pack, is now running trials around BMW’s Munich headquarters.

What’s the big deal about solid-state batteries? Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries rely on solid electrolytes. This key difference brings several major advantages. ASSB  packs are known for delivering longer driving range, faster charging times, and enhanced safety—all while being lighter and more compact.

The test battery integrates BMW’s existing Gen5 prismatic cell architecture with new module concepts tailored for solid-state technology. This setup hints at the possibility that BMW’s current EV platforms might be easily adapted to future solid-state tech – potentially speeding up its path to production.

However, BMW is not the only automaker who is testing this new battery. Mercedes-Benz is also testing solid-state batteries with help from Factorial. Mercedes used a modified EQS, fitted with solid-state batteries. With an expected 40% weight savings compared to current Li-ion batteries, Factorial aims to unlock over 600 miles of driving range.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is working with QuantumScape through its battery unit, PowerCo. Over in China, companies like BYD, SAIC, and CATL are making their own solid-state strides.

In the case of BMW, they are working together with American battery start-up Solid Power. This isn’t a new relationship – the two have been collaborating since 2016. In fact, BMW invested in Solid Power in 2021 and later set up a prototype production line at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf.
