A month ago, Bluesky introduced a verification system to its platform, which includes a feature that allows certain authorised parties called trusted verifiers to directly verify accounts. Now, the system is being expanded to let users send in applications to get verified or become trusted verifiers themselves.
The application process involves filling a multi-page Google Form where the user must share details on their account and explain why they want to be verified. The form also includes some information on the verification process such as what makes an account eligible for verification. According to Bluesky, accounts must be active and secure, authentic, as well as notable to qualify for verification.

While most of the requirements are pretty straightforward like having a bio and profile picture, notability is not as simple to evaluate. According to Bluesky, indicators such as professional recognition, media coverage in established publications, and presence on credible reference platforms are taken into account when determining whether a user is notable in their field or geographic region. It also noted that there may be additional requirements related to specific verification categories, but did not elaborate on these requirements.
The company also mentioned that meeting the basic criteria does not necessarily mean the account will be verified. Bluesky doesn’t exactly clarify what other factors it takes into consideration when evaluating accounts, and it is entirely possible that the company is not quite sure either. The form does state that the criteria for verification is “evolving based on user feedback”, and that the current form is only an initial version that will change as the requirements are finalised.
