Google has officially announced the expansion of its YouTube Shopping affiliate programme to Malaysia. Introduced in Indonesia back in September 2024, the programme was developed in collaboration with Shopee to rival TikTok Shop through creator-promoted e-commerce.
YouTube Shopping enables creators to set up a channel store and promote their products in videos, Shorts, and live streams. Despite its name, however, it is not a e-commerce platform, but rather, it allows YouTube creators to integrate products on Shopee directly in their videos by tagging them and even earn a commission for those products.
The programme has been in testing here since last month and as of now, there are 850 creators on the site that already use YouTube Shopping, with that figure expected to increase. According to Google, creators can include up to 60 products in a video, with a dedicated product button appearing in the video so viewers can see a list of the products being promoted.
Commissions will only be paid between 60 and 120 days after a product is sold to make sure that the product was not returned. Creators can check out the affiliate programme now through YouTube Studio. Keep in mind that, according to Shopee’s FAQ page, products such as alcoholic beverages, health-related products, and unhealthy foods and drinks are not allowed to be promoted on Google.
