Subaru unveiled its second all-electric model, the 2026 Trailseeker at the New York International Auto Show. At first glance, the Trailseeker shares some visual DNA with the Solterra – from its angular body lines to the controversial plastic fender cladding.

However this new SUV stands taller, offers more cargo room, and also features raised roof rails as standard. Other than that, the Subaru EV comes with the new lighting signature with a six-star illuminated logo, redesigned headlamps, a new front bumper design, and newly designed 20- and 18-inch wheels.

Around the back, a three-dimensional Subaru logo and rear gate garnish bring a distinctive nighttime lighting presence. Furthermore, as we reported before, the new model seems to be built on the same e-TNGA platform co-developed with Toyota (also used for the BZ4X) and the Solterra.

Under the hood – or more accurately, beneath the floor of the Trailseeker – is a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery feeding a dual-motor, symmetrical all-wheel drive setup. That translates to 375 horsepower and completes the century sprint in just 4.3 seconds. Moreover it has a towing capacity of 1,588kg.

Ground clearance stands at 8.3 inches, and Subaru’s X-Mode returns with selectable drive settings for snow/dirt, deep snow/mud, downhill assist, and grip control. It’s a setup that should appeal to anyone planning to take their EV off the pavement.

Range is decent, if not class-leading, with an estimated 418km on a full charge. Charging maxes out at 150kW, so it won’t set records there either, but a new battery preconditioning system ensures it can fast-charge efficiently in both hot and cold climates.

When it comes to the interior, the Trailseeker has kept it clean and functional. The centerpiece is a new 14-inch touchscreen – the largest the brand has ever installed – flanked by a wide, device-friendly center console complete with dual 15W wireless chargers and two rear-seat USB-C fast chargers. Meanwhile, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

As for driver assistance tech, Subaru is packing in everything its EyeSight system has to offer. Expect a full suite of safety features like pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, lane keeping, and even emergency stop assist and traffic jam assist for city commuting.

The automaker has yet to reveal the price of the EV SUV. However, it is safe to assume that it is going more than the current Solterra which is currently going for US$38,495 (~RM169,816).
