The much-anticipated iPhone 17 series is expected to be released later this year and has been the focus of much speculation and purported leaks. Now, a new tip on Weibo suggests that the upcoming Apple flagship smartphones could feature cameras equipped with 8K video recording capabilities.
If true, this would make the iPhone 17 series the first Apple smartphones to support this feature. As of now, Apple’s iPhone 16 series offers up to 4K resolution video recording. In contrast, Android flagship smartphones have supported 8K recording for several years, with one of the earliest being the Samsung Galaxy S20 from five years ago.
If 8K video recording is included, the iPhone 17 series may also feature upgraded cameras. As pointed out by GSMArena, shooting at this resolution requires camera sensors with at least 35MP. While this is technically possible with the iPhone 16 series’ 48MP primary sensor, the publication notes that the existing 12MP telephoto could cause resolution inconsistencies when switching between cameras while recording.
If true, this could mean higher-resolution sensors for the telephoto and possibly the ultra-wide camera as well. Of course, this depends on whether the rumour proves accurate.
