When the current-era AI chatbots first emerged, there wasn’t much that you could do with them without signing in using accounts related to their providers. But as OpenAI opened up ChatGPT to users who choose not to sign in, and Microsoft always allowing Copilot usage without signing in -at least to some degree – Google Gemini remained the odd one out. This has changed recently, as the internet search giant has also allowed its AI chatbot to be used without signing in.
You can try this yourself by heading over to gemini.google.com while signed out, even when using your browser’s Incognito Mode equivalent. Rather than seeing a landing page that makes you sign in, or a “Hello (your name)”, you’ll be greeted with “Meet Gemini, your personal AI assistant” instead.

Of course, as with the other available options, using Google Gemini without being signed in comes with some limitations. For instance, you’ll only be using the default 2.0 Flash model. The other options remain listed, but are greyed out until you sign in using your Google account. Similarly, using Gemini without signing in, you don’t get to upload images as part of your prompt, nor do you get access to chat histories, the latter probably being pretty obvious.
Worth noting at this point though that you can only do this on web browsers. The Google Gemini app on mobile devices still require that you be signed in, though if you must avoid signing in at all costs, you can do so on your mobile browser.
