CIMB has released a new notice, which supersedes its earlier announcement regarding Google Wallet for its Mastercard credit card last week. Starting 25 March, the bank is advising customers to use their physical credit card for transactions above RM250 instead. If this sounds confusing, don’t worry, we actually reached out to CIMB for further clarification.
In a nutshell, the bank won’t be proceeding with its initial plan to replace Card PIN authorisation with biometric or passcode verification for Google Wallet transactions above RM250. In fact, it is capping this particular payment method to that amount starting 25 March onwards.
In other words, if you’re planning to purchase anything exceeding that value, be it at stores or online, just use your CIMB credit or debit card instead. Or any other payment method, for that matter.
The bank did not explain why it decided to revert the change, but promises that the plan for biometric and passcode verification to enable Google Wallet payments above RM250 will be implemented at a later time. Unfortunately, it did not provide a time frame for when this will be revisited.
