Intel Wants To Take On AMD In Gaming Handheld Market With Panther Lake

Challenging AMD's status quo in the market.

Intel wants a bigger piece of the gaming handheld pie, and it means to challenge AMD’s dominance in the space. At least, those were the fighting words of Robert Hallock, Intel VP and GM of Client AI and Technical Marketing.

During an interview with Laptop Magazine, Hallock told the outlet that “Intel is beefing up its staff to support gaming ISVs who want to do handhelds”. “We’re starting a number of internal programs to give them more assistance in targeting this performance profile because – relative to what they’re accustomed to – [handhelds] are still relatively rare in terms of availability.” Hallock elaborated.

Intel already has a foot in the proverbial doorway; the company made its first foray into the gaming handheld market with the launch of the MSI Claw and its Meteor Lake mobile CPU last year. To put it in polite terms, the console’s performance was less than stellar but the PC brand kept going with the Claw 8 AI+.

As part of its game plan, Hallock says that Intel is already prepping its next generation Panther Lake mobile chips. Unlike Lunar Lake, which was practically an SoC featuring on-package memory, the future chipset will allow for greater customisation. Following that, Hallock plans on giving game developers dev kits.

“A lot of game devs tend to just target what they have on their desks or in their QA labs,” Hallock says, “and so [we’re] arming them with more handhelds as prototype devices. Getting them dev kits leading into Panther Lake.”
