[UPDATE: 6 November 2024 – 5:48pm] It appears that the 50% discount promo is only given out to a select few, whereas the 20% discount for 20 rides promo applies to new and existing users alike. This detail was recently confirmed by our colleagues and friends who just signed up to Bolt today. Moreover, according to the app’s Promotions page, those who receive the former promo are also eligible to claim the latter.

Bolt’s e-hailing service is now officially available in Malaysia starting today. For those who are interested in giving the new platform a try, its app is already available for download via Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Interestingly, Bolt’s launch in Malaysia was met with little to no fanfare, as the only indication of its commencement was through an in-app notification shared to those who’ve already had its app installed. It’s also worth noting that the new e-hailing platform does have a local version of its Facebook page, though it’s barely been updated at the time of writing.

In terms of available services, as mentioned in our last article, it appears that Bolt is only offering standard e-hailing in Malaysia, and it is uncertain whether the company plans to introduce its courier or food delivery services in the near future. And as for coverage, the official website only lists Kuala Lumpur as its only area of operation in the country at this time.

Interface-wise, Bolt offers a very familiar experience, especially if you’re already accustomed to other e-hailing apps that are already available locally. Different ride choices offered to users include Bolt, Comfort, XL and Premium, with the first being the most affordable. In terms of payments, the platform currently accepts cash and debit/credit cards (AMEX, ApplePay, China UnionPay, Carte Bancaire, Diners, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, MIR and Visa), while e-wallet services are not supported. Meanwhile, its “Bolt balance” in-app virtual payment method is not yet available in Malaysia.

As revealed by the aforementioned notification, Bolt is commemorating its Malaysian launch by offering 50% off for the first seven rides booked via its app for new users, while existing ones get 20% off on 20 rides. Take note that the former promo is set to expire on 16 November and is limited for use in Kuala Lumpur, whereas the latter expires on 13 November 2024 and is limited for use in the Klang Valley. Both are capped at maximum of RM15.

Pricing-wise, after checking the platform’s rates for different locations and comparing with its competitors, the safest way to describe Bolt’s e-hailing charges is “competitive.” There are moments where it is cheaper, but there are also times where its pricing is higher. Much like other players in the scene, this is often determined by time and demand. Nevertheless, remember to take advantage of the discount promos in order to enjoy lower charges.

Thanks @fawzcopter on X for the tip!
