Cybersecurity firm and former smartphone brand BlackBerry has expressed interest to collaborate with Malaysia, prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed via Facebook. He added that the company is aiming to open a cyber security centre in the country, its first in the Asia-Pacific region.

Anwar said he was informed of the plan during a courtesy visit from the Canadian high commissioner Wayne Robson, along with the president and chief executive officer of BlackBerry Cybersecurity John Gianmatteo yesterday afternoon on 16 October 2023. Also present during the meet was Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) chief executive Dr Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin.

“I stated Malaysia’s stance to continue to open up opportunities and facilitate quality investments that foreign parties want to bring in,” the prime minister said. “May the commitment and integrated efforts being carried out by the unity government in structuring the economy attract the interest of more foreign investors.”

There’s no word on when or where the planned BlackBerry Cyber Security Centre of Excellence will be established in Malaysia just yet.
