Amazon Prime Video Announces Two Malaysian-Made Originals Among Local Content Slate

Local movies like Imaginur, Coast Guard Malaysia: Ops Helang to also be added.

Since it became available in Malaysia all the way back in the tail end of 2016, Amazon Prime Video has been a streaming service you’d subscribe to for its breadth of content not found elsewhere, like Netflix for instance. Now, Amazon is announcing “its first local content slate and a localised user experience for customers in Malaysia”, signifying its increase in investment in local content.

As part of the new local content slate are two Amazon Originals, That Cover Girl and Budak Flat, both of which will be launching later this year. The former is described as “a romantic drama series about a dynamic business woman running a fashion empire who tried to keep her modest fashion business from being destroyed”. For those who prefer a more action-packed series, the latter tells the story of “two criminal brothers who find their relationship tested to a deadly conclusion”. No exact date has provided for the premiere of both shows though.

Beyond the two locally-produced Amazon Originals, Prime Video will also be adding in local box office hits into its catalogue of local content. In fact, some of them are already available for streaming, such as Abang Long Fadil 3, Juang, and Kelab Rojak. To be added later include the likes of Coast Guard Malaysia: Ops Helang (on 8 June), Headhunter (on 29 June), Imaginur (on 13 July, and Stone Turtle (on 27 July).

It’s worth noting though that while Amazon calls this the “first local content slate” for Malaysian Prime Video subscribers, there are other Malaysian movies that are already available on the video streaming service. Among them are Leftenan Adnan and the the KL Gangster series, to say nothing about the Upin & Ipin and the BoBoiBoy movies.

At any rate, Amazon says that it is currently offering a seven-day promotional trial, something that looks to have been around since it first became available here. After that, you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription fee is RM25. You can get the mobile app for Android or iOS, as well as sign up and stream shows straight from its official site.
