Starcraft II has been around for about a decade since its release in 2010. Now, it looks like its long life is coming to an end. After two expansions, Blizzard is reportedly ending support for the RTS title.
The news comes via a post on Blizzard’s website. In it, Blizzard executive producer and vice president Rob Bridenbecker says the Starcraft team will now only be working on balance fixes and season rolls. This allows the team to think of “what’s next” for the series.
This means the game will no longer be getting new microtransaction items like War Chests and Commanders. The former is the Starcraft II equivalent of a battle pass. The latter are special characters used in designated special co-op missions.
Ending development of new content could mean one of two things, realistically. One is the possibility of a third numbered title in the series, as the “what’s next” for the series. If that doesn’t happen, then the series may be going into extended hiatus.
At any rate, fans of the game can still play the game with no issues. But it does leave the future of the series in a spot of uncertainty. After all, the original producer and designer for Starcraft II, Chris Sigaty and Dustin Browder, are now with Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime in the new company Dreamhaven.
