Hot on the heels of the Xbox Series X specs reveal, Sony also released the spec sheet for the PlayStation 5. And despite the similar hardware between the two, there are some interesting differences between the way they are used.
But before we begin, here’s the spec sheet, as shared by Sony:
From this, we can see that, in terms of numbers, the PS5 is a little behind on the CPU and GPU department. And while in-game performance should usually reflect these differences, it’s difficult to say whether that’s really the case. This is especially when both consoles feature different customisations to their hardware. Until we see actual in-game performance, there’s no denying that the next-gen Microsoft has the edge here.
One thing that’s a little more comparable is the storage medium. Both will feature custom SSDs that will cut down load times significantly. But the one in the PS5 will have an impressive 5.5GB/s read bandwidth, which sounds crazy.
Another bonus the PS5 has over the Xbox Series X is the form of expandable storage they can take. Both will allow you to plug in an external HDD via USB. But while the Xbox Series X only takes in a proprietary SSD expansion card, you can just slot in a standard M.2 PCIe 4.0 into the PS5. That being said though, your extra SSD has to be small enough to fit inside the console, and has to be at least as fast as the custom one already inside.
