Yes, Pearl Jam. The band that your parents, aunts, uncles, and maybe school teachers idolised when they were young is good and still alive. And you can preview their upcoming single called “Superblood Wolfmoon” simply by aiming your phone’s camera to the moon.
Republic Records, the band’s recording label, has teamed up with creative studio Powster to create an augmented-reality web app. Hosted on Pearl Jam’s website, you can launch the AR feature by first allowing it access to your phone’s camera.
From there, having our lunar neighbour in view will then trigger onscreen animations and a snippet of the new song. A pre-order button is also present if you find it catchy enough to warrant a purchase.
And I’m sure you’re wondering “what if the moon’s not visible?”
Well, it turns out that you can easily fool the app by having your camera pointed at an image of Earth’s natural satellite. Shouldn’t be much of a problem with a bit of Googling.
It’s a weird but fun little gimmick just to preview a new song by a 90s grunge band. Just in case your parents are wondering, Pearl Jam’s Superblood Wolfmoon will be out on 19 February.
