Instagram is adding new effects to its popular Boomerang feature. According to the social media platform’s official Twitter account, effects such as SlowMo, Echo, Duo, and Trimming have been added to the looping video feature in an update rolled out in the US and other certain regions during the weekend.
As its name implies, SlowMo reduces the speed of recorded videos which now plays it for two seconds in each direction instead of one. Echo adds a motion blurring effect where a translucent trail appears behind moving objects. Duo rapidly rewinds the video clip to the beginning with a glitch-like digitised effect. Lastly, Trimming allows users to edit the length of the clip by determining when it starts or ends.

The new effects will be accessible in Instagram by selecting “Trim and tweak your Boomerang” (its icon representing an incomplete infinity symbol) after recording the short video clip in Boomerang. As pointed out by TechCrunch, these effects aren’t actually anything new – similar special effects have been available for some time on TikTok, the platform’s major competitor.
As of writing this article, the new Instagram update containing the new effects for Boomerang has yet to roll out for Malaysia. The company has not released any announcement regarding an exact release date for the time being.
