The Twilight Saga is one of those movies that have managed to stay extremely relevant — for all the wrong reasons — in the pop-cultural zeitgeist for more than a decade now. The film series based on Stephanie Meyer’s romance novels about vampires and werewolves have spawned thousands of memes (i.e. ‘Still a better love story than Twilight‘) and is now considered one of the great crimes against cinema of the 21st century. So much so, that even people who have not watched the films apparently hate them.
Guess what? Even its lead actor, Robert Pattinson thinks the entire premise of the books and movies are kinda dumb. During Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Robert Pattinson spoke to Jennifer Lopez about just how weird he finds the story.
It’s a weird story, Twilight. It’s not just like – it’s strange how people responded a lot to it. I guess the books are very romantic, but at the same time, it’s not like ‘The Notebook’ romantic. ‘The Notebook’ is very sweet and heartbreaking, but Twilight is about this guy, and he finds the one girl he wants to be with, and he also wants to eat her. I mean, not eat her, but drink her blood or whatever. It’s not that other people are telling them they can’t be together, it’s his own body telling him that.
What sucks about the legacy of the Twilight saga is that despite how good its two leads actors have been in the independent scene since then, the mainstream masses only think of Twilight when their names pop up. This is especially true for Robert Pattinson, who despite being one of the most exciting actors working today — watch Good Time and The Rover — was heavily scrutinized when he was cast as the new Batman. Here’s to hoping that Pattinson’s work in the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie, Tenet and also Matt Reeves’ The Batman, finally change the way casual fans see him.
