MediaTek will be focusing more on their mid-range processors rather than the high-end market for the foreseeable near future according to an interview online. Mediatek’s general manager for international sales, Finbarr Moynihan said to Gearburn that the company is now on a break from developing ‘new premium’ devices. Hinting that MediaTek will focus more on the mid-range market for now.
The adoption rate for MediaTek’s high-end Helio X30 remains low, with only a small number of devices out in the market right now. Only Meizu with the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus are available here in Malaysia. A situation that is rather lackluster considering that the Helio X30 was created to compete against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 series mobile platforms.
When asked, Moynihan said that the X30 may not have met the requirements of some global carriers in term of modem performance; hence the limited adoption of the chip by smartphone manufacturers. The company will not be aiming for the bleeding edge in technology for the next 24 months or so, he added later on.
Instead, it will be focusing on the Helio P series for a wider market adoption and perhaps revisit premium in a few years time.
