ZTE Possibly Working On Its First Android Wear Smartwatch

It looks like ZTE is late to the party for smartwatches, but isn’t ready to go home. A report indicates that the company is preparing to launch the ZTE Quartz, an entirely new smartwatch powered by Android Wear.

Almost nothing is known about this new wearable from ZTE, with details of the specifications still kept under wraps. However, what is known is that it is round faced watch with a cellular connection. Whether this is only for a data connection or will allow calls is uncertain.

Things get a bit confusing with the name of the Quartz, seeing that ZTE already sold a smartphone using the same name back in 2015. The company could simply be reusing the name as a placeholder for now, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

ZTE isn’t new to wearable either. It already has the Venus 1 and Venus 2 smartwatches, although these are more fitness trackers more than anything else. They didn’t run on Android Wear, and had a more traditional watch face.

Whether ZTE can make smartwatches work is doubtful. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t going to try. The Chinese company has been pushing to differentiate itself from the rest of the market by making some interesting marketing choices. Which makes it worth at least some attention.
