Blizzard and Overwatch will be celebrating Chinese New Year with the ‘Year of the Rooster’ event. Few details have been revealed, but the two Asian characters in the game are definitely getting new costumes to match the festivities.
Both Mei and D.Va will be receiving Legendary skins that resemble the traditional costumes of their countries. The teaser video on Twitter doesn’t show the actual in-game renders, but seems to indicate that Mei will be equipped with red packets to share her good fortune with everyone (or as good fortune as being frozen can be).

Past Blizzard events included special game modes, and we expect no less from the Year of the Rooster. Still, there’s some way to go before the it arrives on 24 January.

Overwatch fans were expecting St. Valentine’s Day to be the next major event for the game, especially considering the new voice lines that appeared in the Public Test Region. It turns out that those lines may be a minor update, with the big celebration being focused on CNY.
Asia is a big deal for gaming companies these days, and Overwatch has managed to grab the attention of Chinese and Korean gamers like no other game. Catering to national celebrations may go a little further to building goodwill with players on this side of the world. Then again, grinding for lootboxes over the holidays may not sit well with many families.
