Is OnePlus Actually A Fully Owned Subsidiary And Sub-Brand Of Oppo?

Since One Plus has been in the limelight as of late, there has been a lot that was called into question regarding its similarity to other Chinese Manufacturer Oppo. In fact, when you abbreviate its latest phone the One Plus One, you get an eerily similar OPO and the pedigree of One Plus’ CEO Pete Lau doesn’t help matters. Let’s also not forget how similar the One Plus is to the Find 7. Apparently according to Gizmodo China, information from China public industrial and commerce states that “Oneplus is definitely wholly-owned sub-brand of OPPO”.

From Gizmodo China:

According to the commercial subject registration and back-up information shown by Market surveillance department in Shenzhen., the institutional shareholder of Oneplus technical corporation Ltd. is Guangdong OPPO electrical industrial Ltd., and the ratio of OPPO’s investment is 100%.

If this is true, it could indeed be big news. The forums are naturally ablaze with discussion and all sorts of theories. You can check for yourself in the One Plus forums here

So far the admin are giving nothing much other than the standard PR answers despite the growing unhappiness with the brand.

OPO 1

OPO 2

One Plus has also been in the bad books for US customers with safety concerns and the lack of transparency for the rules and regulations for their campaign that calls for people to smash their old phones to get a OnePlus One for US$1.

My question is this, does it matter who owns OnePlus?

The OnePlus One is still an incredible phone and that takes nothing away from it whether OnePlus is owned by Oppo or not. Is the hate train circlejerk against OnePlus a result of a “too good to be true” specs sheet/price relation combined with a difficult availability? Have your say, what do you think?
