Memory and storage brand Lexar has announced the Muse, which it claims to be the world’s thinnest portable SSD. And it may very well be, since at its thickest, it measures in at only 3.8mm. This then tapers out to only 1mm at the edges, making it too thin to even house a USB-C port. Because of this, though, it uses a proprietary cable – which does have a standard USB-C connector on the other end – for its data transfer needs.
The SSD itself connects through what Lexar calls the PogoPin magnetic data connection, which definitely does not look like your average pogo pin connector. Then there’s the cable, which is called the SnapLink Magnetic Cable. Odd nature of connectivity aside, the Muse can still do up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write speeds. The company mentions specifically that the SSD “supports direct external recording of Apple ProRes 4K video at up to 120 fps on compatible iPhone models”.
With that in mind, while it can technically work with any device with a USB-C port, it sounds like the Muse is made primarily for the iPhone, or more specifically the iPhone 15 or newer. Lexar also depicts the Muse as sitting in a sleeve that looks like your average Apple MagSafe Wallet, which itself attaches magnetically to the back of any phone, or indeed case, with such capabilities.
The Lexar Muse will be made in 512GB and 1TB capacities, with the company saying that availability starts sometime in Q4 of 2026. There’s the usual disclaimer that “regional availability may vary” and that “specifications, pricing and compatibility may differ by market”. For now, there are no specifics beyond that, so no local availability or pricing details either. The global product page does mention a five-year warranty, for what it’s worth.
