Ascend Airways Malaysia has secured approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to include passenger operations in its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The approval follows the successful completion of the airline’s AOC variation process, bringing it closer to launching passenger services.
The approval also adds its first passenger aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 registered as 9M-ASG, to its Operations Specifications. Ascend Airways is expected to operate three Boeing 737-800 aircraft under aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) arrangements by the end of 2026.
Passenger Operations In Sight
The latest development follows the completion of Ascend Airways Malaysia’s passenger proving flight on 10 August, which operated between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) and back. The proving flight is a key requirement in the passenger AOC certification process.
Following the flight, the airline said its Flight Operations team would work with CAAM to complete Phase 5, which is the final stage leading to the issuance of its passenger AOC certification. With the latest approval now secured, the airline is expected to commence passenger operations by the end of 2026.
Malaysia’s Newest Airline
Ascend Airways Malaysia was established as a Malaysian subsidiary of UK-based Ascend Airways, which itself operates as a wet-lease and charter airline. The Malaysian carrier received its AOC from CAAM in 2025, initially allowing it to conduct cargo operations.
The airline has previously said it intends to operate under the ACMI model, in which it provides aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance to other airlines. This allows partner carriers to use Ascend Airways Malaysia’s aircraft and crews without having to operate the aircraft themselves.
With passenger operations now nearing launch, Ascend Airways Malaysia will become another player in Malaysia’s increasingly competitive aviation market. The airline has yet to announce details on its planned passenger routes, schedule or ticket sales.
