Apple is preparing to release a new security update for devices still running iOS 18, aimed at addressing the recently discovered “Darksword” exploit. The move comes as a notable exception to the company’s usual policy of prioritising fixes for its latest operating system, reflecting the severity of the vulnerability.
The update is expected to roll out soon and will be delivered automatically to users who have enabled auto-updates. Apple confirmed the plan in a statement to Wired, while continuing to encourage users with compatible devices to upgrade to iOS 26 for the most comprehensive protection.

For iOS 18 Users Who Aren’t Upgrading To iOS 26
The upcoming update is designed for iPhones that are still running iOS 18, including devices that support iOS 26 but have not been upgraded. Apple reportedly made this decision after recognising that a significant portion of users, roughly a quarter of iPhone owners, remain on older software.
This includes users with unsupported devices such as the iPhone X, as well as those who have chosen not to move to newer versions of iOS. Notably, Apple had previously skipped releasing certain late-stage iOS 18 patches for newer models, instead directing users to update to iOS 26.

Quick Recap Of Darksword
As reported previously, the Darksword exploit involves a pair of sophisticated vulnerabilities that can compromise an iPhone simply by visiting a malicious website. The attack does not require any interaction from the user, such as tapping links or downloading files, making it particularly dangerous. It is also reported that Malaysia are among several regions that are significantly vulnerable to the malware.
Once triggered, the exploit can allow attackers to access sensitive user data and potentially take control of the affected device. The vulnerability impacts iPhones running iOS 18 and earlier versions, while devices on iOS 26 are not affected as the issue has already been patched there. Apple had already issued fixes for some older iOS builds shortly after the exploit surfaced, with the exception of iOS 18.

Apple Still Recommends Updating To iOS 26
Despite rolling out this additional patch, Apple maintains that upgrading to iOS 26 remains the best course of action. The latest operating system includes more advanced security protections and is not vulnerable to the Darksword exploit. In its statement to Wired, the company reiterated that users with supported devices should move to iOS 26, even as it provides interim safeguards for those who have yet to upgrade.
The iOS 18 security update is expected to begin rolling out imminently. Users are advised to install it as soon as it becomes available, especially if they plan to remain on the older version for the time being.
