Porsche revealed a new wireless charging technology at IAA Mobility 2025, which will be featured in the upcoming Cayenne Electric. This technology eliminates the need for a wall-box charger and the manual task of plugging in your vehicle. Recently, the automaker updated the details on the wireless charging, giving a deeper insight into the tech.
The system works through inductive charging, where an 11kW charging floor plate will be installed in your garage or porch, and it needs to be connected to a power source. Correspondingly, the Cayenne EV houses a receiver unit underneath it, just behind the front axle.
According to Porsche, before charging for the first time, the vehicle and charging plate must go through an initialisation process via Porsche Communication Management (PCM). The two components exchange data, including a password, to establish a secure connection. This setup occurs only once and is designed to prevent misuse, such as unauthorised power consumption. The floor plate is also equipped with a built-in Wi-Fi module, allowing the vehicle to automatically connect whenever it comes within range.
The PCM system also assists the driver in parking the Cayenne in the correct spot for charging. This is done through the Surround View display, where the Cayenne appears on screen along with two indicators: a green dot showing the location of the vehicle’s receiver, and a green circle representing the charging coil. When the dot sits inside the circle, the SUV is perfectly positioned to begin charging.

Once the car is parked and the driver activates the parking brake, the charging begins. This may sound tedious, but Porsche has accounted for this. Porsche has designed it so that even with a misalignment of up to 10 cm, the charging process will still occur.
Additionally, despite the gap of 12 to 18 cm between the floor plate and the receiver unit, charging efficiency is rated at over 90%. As mentioned earlier, the wireless charging supports up to 11kW, with a charging time rated to be the same as using a wall-box charger.
As for safety measures, the receiver plate is shielded to protect the vehicle from magnetic interference. The floor plate also includes foreign-object detection to spot metal items like keys, plus live-object detection to sense movement from pets or people. These systems either alert the driver or automatically stop charging to ensure safety.
In addition, charging can be monitored through the My Porsche app. As previously reported, the charging plates will be available for purchase at Porsche Centres and through Porsche’s online shop starting in 2026 in Europe, making it an optional feature rather than a standard feature.
