Coinciding with the Mate 70 Air, Huawei announced the FreeBuds Pro 5 on Weibo. As its name suggests, these TWS buds will serve as the successor to last year’s FreeBuds Pro 4.
Unfortunately, Huawei has not yet revealed the full specifications of the device, perhaps saving it for its full launch later this month in China. However, the company has provided a few interesting details for us to mull over while waiting for said launch.
Addressing the elephant in the room first, the company claims that these will be the first earbuds with NearLink Audio technology, according to Notebookcheck. The publication also quoted Huawei, saying that these buds will usher in a “new era of lossless audio”.
As per the report, the NearLink Audio system also reduces the device’s power consumption by up to 40% “compared with traditional solutions”. However, no further explanation was given. The publication also noted that the FreeBuds Pro 5 should offer longer battery life than its predecessor, which already delivered 33 hours of playtime with the charging case.
In terms of performance, Gizmochina reported that the NearLink Audio tech should also allow for 2.3Mbps lossless transmission and a transmission rate of up to 12Mbps. The FreeBuds Pro 5 can also support an L2HC audio codec.
The buds also received a slight design update. The most apparent change, however, is likely the noise-cancelling microphones, possibly intended to improve ANC performance.
Huawei Central reported that the device will be available in four different colours: “Snow White”, “Frost Silver”, “Earth Gold”, and “Sky Blue”. As stated earlier, the FreeBuds Pro 5 will hit Chinese shelves later this month, and it is likely we will hear more details about the device then.
