iCAUR recently previewed its upcoming V23 EV SUV, and I had the opportunity to take the iWD variant for a spin at Kev Avenduro Park, Rawang. This short off-road session on a muddy trail offered valuable insight into the SUV’s off-road prowess and the level of comfort it delivers even in challenging conditions.
The V23 comes with a ground clearance of 210 mm, complemented by an approach angle of 42 degrees and a departure angle of 41 degrees. It also features a minimum turning radius of 5.85 metres, a maximum gradeability of 40%, and a water-wading depth of up to 600 mm. These off-road specifications came into play throughout the drive, allowing the SUV to tackle the muddy and uneven terrain.
Other than this, the V23 also comes with Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Hold Control (HHC). Both these features helped in instances where I faced steep uphill and downhill sections. The dual-motor powertrain and multi-link suspension provided the stability and traction needed while navigating through slippery slopes and rough patches. Furthermore, the track was narrow at certain points, and there were times when I had to make sharp turns, and it was achievable with the V23’s turning radius.
Powering the iWD variant is the aforementioned dual-motor setup that produces a combined output of 211 PS and 292 Nm of torque. The instant torque delivery, typical of electric vehicles, made hill climbs effortless and ensured smooth, confident acceleration even on loose surfaces.
The iCAUR V23 enhances the driver’s experience by providing an off-road dashboard showcasing the pitch angle and roll angle of the vehicle. It also features a 540-degree camera with a transparent chassis view. All of these are displayed on the 15.4-inch central display.
In terms of comfort, the interior comes with a high-roof design that provides exceptional headroom and outward visibility, along with a spacious cabin. These aspects make even a bumpy ride comfortable and enjoyable.
While all of this sounds positive, I felt at times that the car was taking too much control of the drive rather than the driver. If you are an off-roader, you would likely agree that while the vehicle plays an important role, it is ultimately the driver’s skill that determines how well obstacles are manoeuvred. With the iCAUR V23, however, it felt more like taking a cruise through a jungle trail rather than being fully engaged with the car and tackling the terrain together.
Moreover, technologies such as the off-road dashboard feel somewhat excessive for a vehicle designed for genuine off-roading. Although the automaker’s intention is clearly to assist the driver, the sense of challenge and fun that comes with off-roading seems to be diminished.
Despite it all, this brief off-road drive did demonstrate that the iCAUR V23 is not just a stylish electric vehicle, but a capable, well-balanced performer that blends off-road ability with comfort and control. The EV is expected to debut in Malaysia by the end of this year.
