Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) yesterday with the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), represented by its wholly owned subsidiary China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co Ltd (CET). In a statement, the company said the collaboration will enhance Malaysia’s grid technology and contribute to the broader ASEAN goal of achieving stronger regional power interconnection.
Both parties will focus on three main areas: power system planning and integration, smart and resilient networks, and the use of digital and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. SGCC serves more than 1.1 billion customers and operates in over 40 countries through CET as its global business arm. TNB aims to leverage both companies’ extensive experience in energy transition and new-type power systems to improve the operation and management of its power grid and distribution network.
Under the agreement, TNB and SGCC will form a joint working committee to monitor progress and facilitate cooperation. The committee will carry out capacity building sessions, technical study reports, and conceptual design support for pilot projects. TNB will provide relevant technical data, while CET will share advanced technologies, global standards, and project expertise drawn from SGCC’s international operations.

TNB president and CEO Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan said the partnership will help the company adopt global best practices in smart grid development and digital transformation to better integrate renewable energy, while reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable, AI-driven energy future. Meanwhile, CET chairman Yu Jun added that the collaboration also strengthens China-Malaysia ties and supports ASEAN’s shared goals of energy security and sustainability.
