Late last year, YTL announced the locally developed large language model (LLM) Ilmu 0.1. It’s one that distinguishes itself as the one that’s specialised in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and its understanding on Malaysian contexts. Now, the company has announced that it’s taking things a step further with a chatbot implementation, fittingly called ILMUchat.
Expanding on its understanding of BM, this will also include dialects like Kelantanese, as well as our mixed rojak language. It can even help you draft formal letters or speech in Bahasa Istana. On the subject of local context, one demonstration of its understanding is its ability to provide travel recommendations to Malaysian towns. Another is the explanation of the legality and prohibitions on firearms in the country.
In its earlier versions, the chatbot will be focused on text generation, but this will later be expanded to images and voices. And on that note, YTL is launching ILMUchat into early access for the general public on Malaysia Day, 16 September. To gain access, you’ll first have to register your interest via ilmu.ai, which is also the web access URL.

For businesses, it looks like some companies already have access to ILMU, and can start integrating it into their processes. The telco Yes is naturally one of them, but other companies that have partnered with YTL for this include Ryt Bank, Astro, Carsome and Media Prima, among others. The company also says that it will be integrated into Proton infotainment systems, starting with the new X50.
